Why Does My Back Hurt When I Get in Bed?

If you're experiencing pain when you're getting into bed, don't ignore it.

Back pain is a symptom of an underlying problem. And when you feel those dull aches and sharp pains, it's your body's way of telling you, "Something needs to change!"

For many, back pain is just something they live with daily. They think that they're stuck with it.

But in fact, back pain across the US has actually gotten worse over the years, according to The Lancet.

According to the study, the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) from back pain have risen substantially across all age groups.

This may be due to longer work hours, an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, and more office work.

Simply put, if you're experiencing back pain in bed, it's because there's an underlying problem that you need to deal with.

It could be poor posture, stress, or even a medical condition.

Why is Back Pain Worse When Lying Down?

But why does your back pain occur when you're getting into bed? Most people who experience back pain have strained muscles. Not sitting up straight at the desk or lounging unsupported on the couch can cause specific muscles to contract over long periods.

You may not notice it at the moment or when you're up walking around because there's no pressure on them. But when your back hits an unsupportive bed, those sensitive, strained, and damaged muscles are agitated.

And that added pressure on the affected part of your back causes those muscles to hurt.

How Can I Make My Back Stop Hurting in Bed?

There are a few things you can do to help treat your back pain in bed.

First, you can consult with a physician.

They may use high-end procedures like X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, or EMGs to determine why you're experiencing back pain in bed.

However, not all back pain merits seeing a doctor.

Generally, you'll want to make an appointment with your physician only if your back pain.

  • Feels especially severe or radiates to other parts of your body.
  • It quickly gets worse over time.
  • It started with a specific injury.
  • Is showing signs of infection like fever or swelling.
  • It may be causing weakness, numbness, or tingling in your lower body.

If that doesn't sound like you, though, there are a few things you can do at home to help treat your back pain.

6 Quick Solutions to Help Your Back Pain in Bed

Here are some tips to follow that might help you relieve your back pain in bed and get you the sleep you deserve.

1) Reduce Inflammation Through Diet and Exercise

When your joints are already inflamed from your daily activity and eating habits, you're sure to experience pain during the night. To help eliminate your back pain in bed, try reducing or eliminating foods that cause inflammation, such as refined bread and other carbohydrates, fried foods, sugary beverages, and red meat.

Instead, aim to eat foods that help you sleep and that fight inflammation, such as fruit, tomatoes, olive oil, leafy greens, almonds, and fatty fish like salmon and tuna. You may be surprised at how your morning back pain is improved after just a couple of weeks of eating well.

Muscles and joints that are stretched regularly can also improve pain levels when you're lying in bed, so try doing yoga several times per week.

2) Don't Sleep on a Mattress That's Too Soft or Too Hard

A mattress that's too soft will cause your back or hips to sag and your spine to fall out of alignment, which can lead to significant pain. A mattress that's too firm will put too much pressure on your joints, especially if you sleep on your side or your back.

That's why if you want to reduce your back pain in bed, you need a mattress that offers support but that also contours to your body to provide pressure relief and relieve pain.

That being said, there's no one-size-fits-all-best mattress for back pain. Plus, there are plenty of different materials to choose from. So be sure you're investing in a mattress made from suitable materials for your unique needs.

3) Place an Adjustable Base Under Your Mattress

Adjustable base

Sleeping at an incline can take a lot of pressure off of your spine, and so can raising the foot of the bed. An adjustable base allows you to raise and lower your bed until you find yourself in a position that feels great on your lower back.

An adjustable mattress may also help with snoring (an excellent solution for getting restful sleep with your partner).

4) Use a Pillow to Keep Your Spine in Alignment

Waking up with lower back pain often means your spine was rotated throughout the night. If you sleep on your side, try placing a pillow between your knees. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow behind the backs of your knees. And if you sleep on your stomach, try placing a pillow under your hips and lower abdomen and another thin pillow under your head.

The right pillow can go a long way in helping your back pain. But it can also help you reduce neck pain too, as long as you choose the right pillow.

5) Try a Mattress Topper that Can Provide Pressure Relief

If you sleep on your side, a memory foam mattress pad conforms to your body to allow your shoulders to sink in while keeping your spine aligned. Back sleepers can also benefit from a reasonable foam mattress pad because it conforms to your lower back.

Just be sure you're not only getting the right one, but you're also using your mattress topper properly.

6) Look into a Custom Mattress For Even Better Back Pain Relief

Last but not least, you may want to consider buying a custom-made mattress to help eliminate your back pain in bed.

A custom mattress is precisely what it sounds like—a mattress made to fit your exact specifications and unique needs.

Custom mattresses can be made to fit almost any size (including spaces on RVs, boats, futons, trucks, and more). But they can also carry with them a wide range of other benefits like eliminating back pain, keeping you cool at night, and even eliminating certain sleep problems.
